What is Composite Decking Made Of?

Many people will have a preconceived idea of what a composite material is – made of plastic, unstainable, harmful to the environment and ugly. Here at Ecodek, we want to show you that composite material, especially wood composite decking, is a sustainable, beautiful, and practical alternative to real timber.

Made from mixing together wood fibre, recycled plastic and bonding agents, the materials are then heated together and cooled to form boards. The result is a high-quality, long-lasting composite board, which has all the beauty of timber but the practicalities of plastic.

What Is Wood Composite?

Wood composite material is a combination of wood fibres, recycled plastics, and bonding agents. These materials are heated together, formed into boards, and then cooled. The result is a high-quality, long-lasting composite board, which has all the beauty of timber but the practicalities of plastic.

With so many advantages, we’ve made it easier for you and picked our top 5:

  1. It’s the sustainable choice – Not only can you recycle our wood composite decking, but its manufactured from up to 95% recycled and sustainably sourced materials. Making Ecodek the most environmentally friendly option for your garden.

  3. We’re made in Britain – That’s right, not only will you be buying green, but you will also be buying British. All our wood composite decking is made right here in Britain, so you’ll be helping the environment and the economy.
  4. It’s rot and split resistant – which means it will keep its appearance and integrity for longer than traditional timber.
  5. It’s long lasting – We guarantee you will love your decking for many, many years, but if in doubt all Ecodek products come with a minimum 10 year warranty*.

Common Decking Problems & How to Mitigate Them?

The key to a long lasting deck is firstly about selecting the right product for your project. Knowing the pros and cons of both traditional timber and composite decking will ensure you choose the right option for you. Opting for composite decking will give you peace of mind, but there are always questions that need answering.

It’s all in the preparation.

Our customer service team on hand to help with any questions or queries you may have on how to prepare your chosen area for your deck. But it is paramount that you take time in correctly preparing your ground head of laying your boards. As with any DIY project, an ill-prepared area will jeopardise the end result. If in doubt, talk to our expert team.

To paint or not to paint?

The beauty of composite decking is that its available in many styles and finishes to suit your desired look. In our eyes, there is no need to paint your decking once its fitted. However, you can paint it if you wish but due to the composite material our decking is made from, any paint will chip and wear easily, so we wouldn’t recommend doing so.

Accidents can happen

We know that accidents can happen, moving furniture and plant pots or dropping plates and glasses can cause scuffs and scratches to occur. But don’t worry – there are ways and means of getting your decking back to its beautiful best.

For a light scuff, it is best to leave it well alone. Once your composite boards have weathered slightly, most scuff marks will naturally fade or even disappear over time and will become unnoticeable. If the scuff or scratch is deeper but is not completely through the top surface, a walnut can be used to help blend the marks until natural weathering has taken place. Only use a natural raw walnut – do not use extracted walnut oil or any other oil prescribed for scratch removal. If in doubt, contact our expert technical team who can talk you through it.
